In this blog, we will take you through everything you need to know about building a successful career in NJ real estate, from the pre-licensure course to the state examination and beyond.

Step 1: Complete a 75-hr Pre-Licensure Classroom Course
To become a licensed NJ real estate salesperson, you must complete a 75-hour pre-licensure course. This classroom course covers all the essential topics you will need to know, from real estate law and ethics to contract writing and closing procedures.  North Central Jersey School of Business provides flexible day and evening classes for conducted by approved instructors who are actively involved in the Real Estate industry and bring their real-world experience into the classroom. Once you have successfully completed the course, you will receive a certificate of completion that you can use to apply for your real estate license.

Step 2: Prepare for the State Examination
After you have completed your pre-licensure course, you will need to prepare for the state examination.  The state exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions with 3 1/2 hours given to complete. The exam fee is $15.00, and the passing score 70%. There are many exam prep courses offered by different providers. Make sure to prepare well in advance of your testing date to ensure passing.

Step 3: Join a Brokerage and Get Licensed
Once you have passed the state examination, you must obtain a NJ real estate salesperson's license through the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI). This involves finding a brokerage to work with, submitting your license application, and paying all related fees. Many licensed real estate brokers will be happy to talk to you about what their brokerage has to offer to those new to the business. Your managing broker will oversee your transactions and advises you on how to conduct your business as a fledgling sales associate under their supervision.

Step 4: Build Your Reputation, Network and Get Clients
Building your reputation, network and acquiring clients is fundamental in a real estate career. A successful career in NJ real estate requires that you constantly work to promote yourself effectively to potential clients while maintaining a positive relationship with clients you are working with at present. Ensure you build a strong social media presence, send out regular newsletters, engage with prospective and existing clients by attending events and networking in different circles, and forming alliances with professionals that can contribute to a client base. By building relationships with those around you, both personally and professionally, you can help to establish yourself as a trusted and reliable source for all things real estate.

A career in NJ real estate is an exciting way to practice your entrepreneurial skills and work flexible hours. You will be independent and own your own business, set your schedule, and pursue your passions. While the pre-licensing course and state exam may seem daunting at first, the benefits of a career in real estate are tremendous. Take the first step towards building a successful real estate career today by registering for a pre-licensing course, passing the state examination, obtaining the license, and joining a brokerage.
